Artist Bio

Aaron Margolis was raised in New York and lives and works in Ellsworth, Maine.  He is an artist, craftsperson, teacher, and luftmensch, who sees art as a “as a way to create a new home for myself within myself.” He was introduced to art by his mother at an early age and in recent decades has experimented with sculpture, assemblage, paint, and any other medium or objects he finds. His works draw upon an extensive knowledge of traditional woodcarving techniques, honed through building sustainable houses from the ground up.  His practice is steeped in the Yiddishkeit heritage of his forebears’ in Eastern Europe and informed by creative dialogue with artistic precursors including Philip Guston, Red Grooms, and Louise Nevelson. His most recent work is a large-scale public menorah, commissioned by the Town of Searsport.
