Artist Bio

Robert Katz was born in Brooklyn and received his MFA from the University of Montana.  He lives and works in Maine, where he is a professor at the University of Maine at Augusta.  Katz’s sculptures and installations often explore issues of identity and remembrance, including experiences of exile and redemption.  His sculptures are held in various private and public collections, including that of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Maine Jewish Museum, and his work has been exhibited as far afield as the Jiangsu Chinese Art Academy.  He is the designer of numerous Holocaust memorials including Dwelling of Remembrance at the Scarsdale Synagogue in New York, and he serves on the board of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine.  Katz has spoken on his art and Holocaust memory across the world, from Canada to England, Germany, Poland, and Israel, and recently held a fellowship at the Amen Institute.
